After your initial contact with LRRO we will ask you to fill out an If you decide to allow us to find a new home for your Lab, you will complete an Owner Surrender Contract. Please read the contract carefully before signing. We will then arrange for a volunteer to meet with your dog at a designated veterinarian where your dog will be given a physical examination, and any required medical attention (spaying\neutering, vaccinations, deworming etc.). Please feel free to provide any special toys, or comfort objects your dog has become accustomed to. There is a minimum fee of $60 required with the surrender of your dog. Your dog will then be monitored for several days by a volunteer observer at their home. They will be assessing your dogs behavioral, and personality traits. The observer is a volunteer who is an experienced dog owner, and/or has experience training dogs. We do not arrange for adoption of Labs that are either dog-aggressive or people-aggressive. Observations made will be used to decide if the dog is suitable for adoption, and will help identify the most suitable new owners.
New owners sign an adoption contract which covers such things as the standard of care expected by the LRRO, and pay an adoption fee which helps cover veterinary expenses, and administration costs of the program. The dog can be reclaimed by the LRRO if any conditions of the contract are breached. Volunteers of the LRRO will follow-up after the adoption process to ensure that there is a suitable match between the new owner and dog, and that the dog is being well cared for. Remember our primary concern is the well being, and happiness of the Lab! The length of time it takes for a Lab to be adopted depends on a number of factors including: the number of approved new owners, and dogs on our lists, the age, sex, and colour of the dog, the dogs temperament, level of training, and the time of the year. LRRO volunteers will take all available measures to facilitate the permanent placement of the dog in a suitable, stable home as soon as possible.
